Racism takes away the humanity of both children of color and white children. It is important that we affirm children’s identities. White parents need to teach their children not to be bystanders to racism and to use their voices.
Teach Our Children to Use Their Voices
This read aloud of SAY SOMETHING helps explain race to kids as well as the importance of speaking up.
In this empowering picture book, author Peter H. Reynolds explores the many ways that a single voice can make a difference. Each of us, each and every day, have the chance to say something: with our actions, our words, and our voices. Perfect for kid activists everywhere, this timely story reminds readers of the undeniable importance and power of their voice. It has a powerful message to children: There are so many ways to tell the world who you are… what you are thinking… and what you believe. And how you’ll make it better. Before you play the video read-aloud to this book, consider the following:
Pause throughout the video to check in with your child about how they are feeling and making sense of the book’s message.
Consider purchasing the physical book to read along with the video.
Tell your child, “today we are going to read a book called “Say Something” by Peter H. Reynolds. Each of us, each and every day, have the chance to say something: with our actions, our words, and our voices. This book might bring up some questions that I might or might not have the answers, but I want you to feel free to ask me anything.”

SAY SOMETHING Read Aloud
The world needs your voice. If you have a brilliant idea… say something! If you see an injustice… say something!

After the read aloud, consider the following:
Ask your child, “what is the message of the author?
Ask your child, “what are the different ways that you can ‘say something’?” Make a list of examples together.
Ask your child, “as you listened, did any of the examples remind you of your own life or a time when you had to say something?”
Share a story with your children about a time when you had to stand up for yourself because you were being treated unfairly. How did you feel?
Ask your child, “what can we do to be an advocate? Talk with your child about speaking up, speaking out, and supporting others.
